We study an outpatient appointment app that provides information on hospital crowdedness and demonstrate that information provision improves market efficiency by facilitating sorting| i.e., alignment of heterogeneous demand and supply. We find that the app prompts patients with mild conditions to use primary care facilities and allows acute care hospitals to receive more patients with severe conditions. Improved sorting leads to fewer revisits, lower spending, and better adherence to prescription guidelines. Adopting the app also enhances hospital productivity and is financially viable. Our analysis highlights the potential for market-driven mechanisms that mitigate non-price information frictions in the healthcare market.
