Finance is a subject area that based on data and quantitative analysis. The sheer volume of data the financial industry was producing – and the need to analyse and act upon it as efficiently as possible – led to the development of computer-based algorithms. Both institutional and individual traders began to rely upon these algorithms and, with the development of machine learning, traders began to be replaced by computers. Automated trading now accounts for nearly 75 percent of all financial market volume. However, whilst AI offers countless opportunities for greater efficiency in the finance industry, it also harbours potentially great risks. This seminar will explore the implication of AI on financial markets and its possible effects on investors.
